Celebrating 50 Years of Rugby League

In 2026, the Waverley Oakleigh Panthers Rugby League Football Club proudly celebrates its 50th anniversary, marking half a century of rugby league excellence, community spirit, and resilience.

The club was founded in 1976 as the Waverley Rugby Club by a group of close friends and dedicated players who shared a passion for the game. The name originated from the club being established in what was then the City of Waverley. The club’s first home ground was Larpent Reserve in Glen Waverley, and the original nickname was the Kangaroos, with the playing strip reflecting the colours of the Australian national team.

Within the first few years, the club was renamed the Waverley Rugby League Club to better distinguish itself from rugby union clubs. The inaugural season proved highly successful, with the newly formed club finishing fourth in the Victorian Rugby League competition, competing against well‑established and formidable opponents. This achievement was celebrated at the club’s first trophy presentation, held at Jells Park in a historic tram — a memorable milestone in the club’s early history.

Just five years after formation, the Waverley Rugby League Club secured its maiden premiership in 1980, cementing its place in Victorian rugby league.

In 1990, the club relocated to Clayton, within what was then the City of Oakleigh. Around the same time, the VRL directed clubs to adopt the colours and monikers of existing NSWRL teams. The club chose the Penrith Panthers’ name and colours, becoming the Waverley Oakleigh Panthers Rugby League Club — retaining the Waverley name as an important link to its heritage.

The Panthers’ initial Clayton home ground was located adjacent to Monash Medical Centre, however this site was later absorbed by the hospital’s expansion. In 1997, the club moved to newly constructed clubrooms and upgraded playing facilities at Fregon Reserve, where it proudly remains today.

Between 1989 and 1999, the Panthers enjoyed their most successful on‑field decade, contesting seven grand finals and winning three consecutive premierships in 1992, 1993, and 1994.

The club continued to grow throughout the 1990s and 2000s. In 2007, the VRL introduced Ladies’ and Girls’ Tag competitions. The Panthers entered teams in both grades, proudly known as the Waverley Oakleigh “Pink” Panthers. Both teams enjoyed outstanding inaugural seasons, claiming premierships, with the Girls’ Tag team going on to win five of the first seven premierships.

In 2016, the club celebrated its 40th anniversary, and in 2023, the Panthers achieved a long‑awaited milestone by winning their first Senior Premiership in 29 years and fifth overall, defeating the Truganina Rabbitohs 28–18. That season was particularly memorable, with the club also winning the newly established pre‑season competition and finishing second in the regular season to qualify for finals.

CLUB COLOURS AND EMBLEM

The club proudly preserves this history, with a framed original jersey displayed in the current clubhouse in Clayton, alongside a collection of other early playing strips. The original jumper was generously donated by its owner on the club’s 20th anniversary, making it a significant piece of Panthers heritage.

In 1990, following the club’s relocation to Clayton and direction from the VRL, the club adopted the Penrith Panthers’ colours and moniker, becoming the Waverley Oakleigh Panthers Rugby League Club. The current colour palette of black, white, green, yellow, and red mirrors that of the NRL side.
